Shabri 2011 Lalit Marathe SHABRI TO RELEASE AFTER FIVE YEAR WAIT

Produced by Ram Gopal Varma, SHABRI, an Indian film about the country’s first female gangster, is to hit cinema screens next month — some five years after production was completed.

The film was written and directed in 2006 by Lalit Marathe. It stars Isha Koppikar as a woman who rises from the slums to control a major gambling operation and threatens the corridors of power. It’s a story of survival, dignity, determination, and human triumph in the face of impossible odds. Presented by Reliance Entertainment, SHABRI is slated to release on 26th August 2011.

Reasons for the delay are murky and may include RGV Productions’ financial difficulties after a big 2007 flop. In 2009 Marathe, a well-known scriptwriter, launched a Facebook campaign to have the film released. It is equally unclear as to why SHABRI should be released now. One suggestion is possible competition from Vishal Bhardwaj’s upcoming DAAYAN, another film about a female criminal.

However, the director dismisses all the speculations and said, “The film is a fictional account of a female gangster. It will not be similar to the one Vishal Bhardwaj is going to make, which I believe is based on a story from Hussain Zaidi’s book. I hope the delay works in favour of the film rather than against it.”

The film starring Isha Koppikhar, newcomer Raj Arjun, Manish Wadhwa, Pradeep Rawat, and Zakir Hussain among others.

PETALING JAYA: SYAMSUL YUSOF has not only improved on his father’s record, but also broken box-office takings for a local film twice in six months and is now the most financially successful film-maker in Malay cinema history.

As of last Saturday night, his sixth and latest directorial outing, crime actioner KL Gangster surpassed the RM10 million mark, with figures still steadily climbing.

KL Gangster Poster 207x300 RECORD BREAKING KL GANGSTER PUSH FOR RM12 MILLION “It’s definitely more than what I expected,” said Syamsul, 27, visibly taken aback by the news when met by The Malay Mail.

“Honestly, I didn’t set targets. When we initially previewed the film, our team found many elements absent. The missing elements, we felt, could have made it even better. With public response, however, I don’t know what to say or how to respond.”

He said there was no secret formula to the collections that made KL Gangster the highest-grossing Malay film to date.

“There is no formula, and we can never predict what audiences want. At Skop Productions, we never make the box-office collection as the bottomline. We only focus on giving what audiences want and we try hard to please them. The quality of a movie too dictates what we do, and that is our main aim when making movies,” said Syamsul.

His fifth film, horror thriller Khurafat, released earlier this year, raked in RM8.08 million. It was then second only to Metrowealth International Group’s (MIG) Ngangkung, released last November, grossing RM8.18 million.

However, until KL Gangster, Khurafat was the highest-grossing release this year and earned Syamsul the label of ‘Eight Million Dollar Man’.

Previously, the record of surpassing RM6 million was created by Syamsul’s father Datuk Yusof Haslam whose 1995 sequel Sembilu II earned Yusof the title of ‘Six Million Dollar Man’.

Now, with KL Gangster, Syamsul will be known as the ‘Ten Million Dollar Man’.

“I don’t want any title people may hand out to me. Personally, it worries me as expectations run higher, and I know we won’t always deliver. As they say, the bigger they are, the harder they fall. I just want to focus on making films that make audiences happy,” said Syamsul.

Syamsul Yusof KL Gangster RECORD BREAKING KL GANGSTER PUSH FOR RM12 MILLION

KL Gangster, which stars Aaron Aziz, Adiputra, Ridzuan Hashim and Zizan, is expected to surpass RM12 million before it reaches compulsory two-weeks screening at local cinemas on Wednesday… in which case, Syamsul will have a new tag as the “Twelve Million Dollar Man’.

“A follow-up movie to KL Gangster is in the pipeline, but it will not be a sequel, but rather a prequel. We planned this beforehand, and the prequel will answer many questions raised in KL Gangster. We plan to start shooting the prequel in October,” said Syamsul.

“The storyline has been worked out and we just need to fine-tune and tighten it. The original cast will feature again.”

As for a possible TV spin-off of KL Gangster, Syamsul said he was unsure if he would proceed with an adaptation of his hit movie for the small screen.

“There have been requests by fans for a TV spin-off, even before KL Gangster was released, just based on the trailer and promos alone,” he said.

“Of course, a KL Gangster TV series is a long-term possibility. Khurafat is making the jump to TV and shooting is going on now.”

Talk about striking while the iron is hot, Syamsul has a third film for release this year – Aku Bukan Tomboy which will opened on Nov 11, during the long final-term school holidays.

“I aimed for three movies this year as my father ‘pushed’ me,” said Syamsul, adding even better response to KL Gangster was due to the success of Khurafat.

His next film will be Jalan Kembali, a sequel to his 2009′s Bohsia, and is now being edited and dubbed.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, as Syamsul’s younger brother, Syafiq Yusof, 18, is next in line as a film-maker, with a love story-cum-thriller titled Sam to start shooting soon.
