The 64th Locarno Film Festival 2011 64TH LOCARNO FILM FESTIVAL 2011 OFFICIAL SELECTIONS

The 64th Locarno Film Festival announced the lineup for its year 2011 edition. The festival will run from 3rd to 13th August.

This year the Concorso Internazionale presents 20 features, of which 14 are world premières. This competition, both open-minded and demanding, brings together several major names in contemporary cinema who have already produced a body of work that has been acclaimed at many festivals – Locarno regulars, and those invited for the first time, as well as young auteurs from all over the world whose talent and skill already prove they are ripe for international competition.

The Concorso Cineasti del presente, more compact than that of last year, consists of 14 first or second films of which 9 are world premières. This section bears witness to our openness to countries that are emerging on the world cinema map, as it pays particular attention to the most original and gifted of filmmakers on the international indie cinema scene. There are films to be discovered from Portugal, China, Argentina, Italy, France, Switzerland, the Philippines, the USA, Kazakhstan, and a Korean film shot in Uzbekistan!

The Pardi di domani section, devoted to short films, which last year celebrated its twentieth anniversary, is enriched with a new out-of-competition section corti d’artista screening shorts made at the interstices of film and the plastic arts and directed by artist-filmmakers and filmmaker-artists. The corti d’autore section will screen films made by actors and directors who have already made feature films.

Alongside the competitions, fifteen films in the Fuori concorso section offer a panorama of work from all over the world, documentaries, film essays, mid-length films and fiction films as world, international or European premieres.

The Festival del film Locarno salutes the courage of Jafar Panahi, sentenced to six years in prison, and banned from filmmaking for twenty years, for having criticised the Iranian regime, by screening his second feature, The Mirror, winner of the Golden Leopard at the Festival del film Locarno in 1997.

Finally, this year the Festival’s major retrospective is dedicated to Vincente Minnelli, master of the Hollywood musical and melodrama, all of whose films will be screened in the best available 35mm prints.
