Synopsis:
The Jay DeMerit Story is the true story of a young American’s impossible journey – a journey never experienced or heard of in the soccer world.
After college Jay’s dream of playing pro soccer in Europe seemed unreachable. Sleeping in an attic, painting houses and eating beans and toast to survive, Jay took the most unlikely route to the top. After not making the professional leagues in the US Jay left for Europe at the age of 21 without any professional experience – only a passport, $1500 and a backpack full of dreams.
The film documents Jay’s journey from the bottom – playing in Sunday park leagues and lower division London clubs earning £40 per week – to playing in the English Premier League – to starting in the 2010 World Cup. The Jay DeMerit Story is a story of perseverance, hard work and relentless belief in a dream……it is a story that needs to be told.

Robert Hatch (Sylvester Stallone) is enlisted to assist the Allied prisoners to train for the event. But, in fact, the Allies are planning a risky escape during the soccer match. Famed Brazilian soccer great Pele makes an appearance in the film, along with Bobby Moore, the captain of Britain’s 1966 World Cup champions, and Argentine soccer star Osvaldo Ardiles.
THE TWO ESCOBARS
Director: Michael Zimbalist, Jeff Zimbalist Cast: Info Not Available Genre: Documentary Running Time: 110 mins
Synopsis:
Pablo Escobar was the richest, most powerful drug kingpin in the world, ruling the Medellín Cartel with an iron fist. Andres Escobar was the biggest football star in Colombia. The two were not related, but their fates were inextricably and fatally intertwined. Pablo’s drug money had turned Andres’ national team into South American champions, favored to win the 1994 World Cup in Los Angeles. It was there, in a game against the U.S., that Andres committed one of the most shocking mistakes in soccer history, scoring an “own goal” that eliminated his team from the competition and ultimately cost him his life.
The Two Escobars is a riveting examination of the intersection of sports, crime, and politics. For Colombians, football was far more than a game: their entire national identity rode on the success or failure of their team. Jeff and Michael Zimbalist’s fast and furious documentary plays out on an ever-expanding canvas, painting a fascinating portrait of Pablo, Andres, and a country in the grips of a violent, escalating civil war.

The NASL made very little impact in the US, where soccer had virtually no following, until in 1975 the New York Cosmos succeeded in signing the most famous player in the world, Pele. Attendence for Cosmos games exploded, outdrawing even the New York Giants and New York Jets of the NFL, to where exhibition games in Seattle were drawing huge crowds, and when Pele announced his retirement in 1977 his final game drew the biggest crowd to ever see a soccer game in the US. His retirement from the game began a slow but steady decline for the NASL as money issues for the league and the spending practices of the Cosmos became a running controversy.

It’s December 30, and everyone is milling about. But the “incident” that rocked this small town began with a single phone call. “Hello, Mitama Cultural Center. Yes, you’re calling to confirm your concert, correct? That’s right. Mitama Chorus Girls, tomorrow evening at 7:00. All set. We’ll see you then.” Thus the cultural center’s director confidently replies to the caller. But just a moment later, he realizes that they are hardly “all set”! There’s the “Mitama Chorus Girls” and the “The Mitama Ladies’ Chorus”: two similar-sounding names were confused by this hapless director. Of all things, his mismanagement has led to a double-booking on New Year’s Eve! The long-established, refined ladies’ group says, “Tomorrow is our 20th anniversary performance! There’s no way we can reschedule.” And the newly-formed, amateur group says, “We were so looking forward to tomorrow, and we even arranged our chores and part-time jobs just to make this performance!” Neither group will budge an inch. The director, who had always enjoyed stability in both his work and private lives, becomes flustered in the face of the ladies’ passion for their choral groups. On top of that, his marriage hits a rocky patch, his bar tab is up for payment, and his whole life is turned upside-down. With this catastrophe on New Year’s Eve, what will our director’s fate be? And what of the “mamas” who have practiced their hearts out for this night? The heartwarming musical comedy Ode to Joy uses song to remind us of a nearly-forgotten sincerity.
